Pianist Roberta Piket and drummer Billy Mintz have developed a heady simpatico that’s a marvel to hear, no matter who’s in the bass slot.
Roberta Piket is a gifted pianist and composer who leads one of the most accomplished and idiosyncratic piano trios in jazz.
One of those understated, subtly inventive groups that eschews gimmickry to simply burrow straight into the heart of any piece they tackle, finding surprises and depth from within.
Roberta’s piano trio, featuring sensitive drummer Billy Mintz, sets a new standard in subtle yet swinging trio interaction. For several years the trio has delighted audiences along the West coast of the US from San Diego to Seattle during their annual fall tour. They have also toured Spain twice, performing at both the 2006 and 2007 Madrid Jazz Festivals.
In addition to performing originals by Billy and Roberta, whose very different writing styles serve as a complement to one another, the trio plays rarely performed compositions by Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock and several underplayed standards from the popular American songbook. The music ranges from lyrical and swinging to free-wheeling and adventurous. Every performance is driven by a rare combination of spontaneous creativity and disciplined focus that mesmerizes audiences.
